David Post was born in New York City and holds degrees from the University of Chicago, the New School for Social Research and Brandeis University. His teachers have included Charles Whittenberg, Ralph Shapey, Larry Bell and Lukas Foss.

He has received several awards and commissions from individuals and organizations, and has been performed and recorded by internationally known soloists, choruses, chamber groups and orchestras. His Fourth String Quartet was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize in music. His music can be heard on Naxos, Centaur and MMC recordings.
